Born and raised in the suburbs of Detroit, John Varvatos is of Greek descent with his parents and family hailing from the Greek island of Cefalonia. With a net worth of over $70 million, he is one of the world’s leading contemporary fashion designers and with good reason too. Bringing his own iconic style to the fashion design table, Varvatos has worked for both Polo Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein and currently runs his own fashion house, John Varvatos.
It is Varvatos’ musical sensibility that makes his designs so strikingly different from the rest and it’s not difficult to see where his early musical influence came from. Growing up in Detroit gave Varvatos a chance to immerse himself in the rich rock and roll culture of Motor City. Icons like Iggy Pop and Alice Cooper helped set the stage for a new era of fashion and Varvatos was at its helm.
Varvatos started his fashion design career in 1983 when he joined Polo Ralph Lauren. Seven years later he moved on to Calvin Klein as the head of menswear design. After mastering the role, he felt a change was needed and returned to Polo Ralph Lauren where he took up the role of head of the menswear division. This was a time of learning for Varvatos and he didn’t begin to make waves in the fashion industry until he started his own fashion house, John Varvatos.
His first launch in 2000 catapulted his label to success and after receiving critical acclaim for his ‘black-less collection’ his label went from strength to strength. A team effort with Converse later saw his blockbuster ‘laceless sneakers’ and his brand now designs everything from belts, watches, handbags, eye-wear and fragrances.
In 2004, Varvatos launched his maiden fragrance, John Varvatos Classic which was followed two years later by Vintage. His most recent fragrance, Platinum was launched in 2013 and is the perfect complement to his line of very popular men’s fragrances.
John Varvatos Cologne for Men
John Varvatos for Men – John Varvatos’ signature men’s cologne came out in 2004. Created using Varvatos’ ideas, the cologne was the designer’s first. The fragrance is oriental, modern and intriguing. A special attention has been given to the choice of fragrant ingredients. The notes create a subtle blend and include: lime, cinnamon, pepper, balsams, vanilla, medjool date, cedar wood, sandalwood, plum, black leather essence, clary sage, eagle wood, West Indian tamarind tree leaves, auramber, Indian fig leaf and coriander seed templar. The opening is fruity but brief. The fragrance quickly settles into a long-lasting, warm, luxurious and masculine dry down. The sillage and projection are both outstanding. Men By John Varvatos is best worn at night in the summer months.
John Varvatos Vintage – Introduced in 2006 and created by Rodrigo Flores-Roux, Vintage is a special-edition fragrance inspired by Varvatos’ first ever cologne, Men By John Varvatos. Vintage has all the luxury and masculinity of its predecessor. It also exudes a new, bold assertiveness. The blend includes notes of quince paste, santolina, absinthe, fennel, juniper berries, cinnamon, pepper, lavender, jasmine, orris root, oak moss, balsam fir, green leaves, patchouli, tonka beans, tobacco leaf, suede accents, ashwood and Madras wood. The top mixes masculine tobacco, sweet cinnamon and spicy pepper. The dry down is musky and mature. Vintage is assertive but non-offensive and can be worn during the day. A high-quality fragrance at an affordable price.
John Varvatos Platinum – Platinum is John Varvatos’ newest cologne. It was introduced in 2013 and created by the nose behind John Varvatos Vintage, Rodrigo Flores-Roux. It contains very little to no sweetness. It is a well-balanced, expertly crafted fragrance which exudes maturity and confidence. The top notes are bitter orange, sage, ceylon cinnamon, myrtle and bergamot. The heart notes are vetiver, leather and frankincense. The woodsy base includes notes of amber and white sandalwood. Platinum is modern yet classic. This dark and earthy cologne will last up to 12 hours. It is warmer and more mature than Men and Vintage. The warm notes truly shine in the cold weather.
