Tom Ford is thought to be by many, the most influential designer of the last decade. With a daring approach to fashion, he once said: “Perfume is worn on the skin, so why hide the body,” after causing a stir with his advertising of YSL M7, a new fragrance at the time. Certainly a designer who knows how to grab attention, his full frontal ad of a naked Samuel de Cubber shook the world of fashion to its foundations. There was more to come.
A floundering Gucci, on the verge of bankruptcy in 1990 took a chance on an unknown designer in Tom Ford. It was the start of a meteoric rise for Ford and an astounding recovery for Gucci. It took Ford a mere 4 years before he was running eleven design-lines for Gucci including fragrances, ready-to-wear and store design. As their new Creative Director, sales under Tom Ford rose by a massive 90% in his first year which heralded the beginning of Gucci’s reestablishment as a household name. By 1999, Gucci was worth $4.3 billion.
Because of Tom Ford’s refreshing and modern take on fashion design, Gucci was soon able to buy Yves Saint Laurent. It wasn’t long before YSL became a leading fragrance maker with such worldwide hits as YSL M7. He also oversaw the production of two of Gucci’s new fragrances, Rush and Envy before his departure in 2004.
Tom Ford went on to build his own fashion empire, Tom Ford, under which he created designs for both men and women from accessories to eye-wear. He even went on to become an acclaimed film director and once again made the world open its eyes with the Oscar nominated A Single Man.
Tom Ford was born in Austin, Texas in 1962 and graduated with a degree in architecture. His next target is Hollywood and few would bet against him on this evidence.
Tom Ford Cologne for Men
Yves Saint Laurent M7 – Launched in 2002 and created by Tom Ford during his time as creative director at YSL, M7 is a sensual, rich, seductive and masculine scent. The base notes are musk, mandrake root and amber. The heart is vetiver and luxurious agarwood (oud). The top notes are rosemary, bergamot and sweet mandarin orange. It leaves a light, musky and woody sillage. It is resinous, dark but sweet on the skin at first and has an elegant, amber dry down. This is a perfect fragrance for a night out, and is sure to make heads turn. M7 is very much a men’s cologne: not unisex. The first rendition of M7 was considered and still is considered to this day as one of the best men’s cologne available.
Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille – Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille is a thing of beauty. A mix of Tom Ford’s timeless design and perfumer Olivier Gillotin’s sophisticated nose. The bottle seems to be straight out of the 50’s. The fragrance is sumptuous and spicy. It has base notes of dried fruits’ accord and wood sap and heart notes of tobacco blossom, cocoa, vanilla and tonka bean. The top notes are tobacco leaf and spices. The fragrance opens with a strong, elegant and heady tobacco scent. It reminds of the smell of a classy cigar room. The fragrance settles into a sweet and subtle mix of vanilla, chocolate and pipe tobacco. It is opulent and fits the night perfectly, but it is also versatile and can be worn during the daytime. A true gourmand cologne.
Tom Ford Noir – Another sensuous and intriguing offering by Tom Ford. The plush and oriental Noir (French for ‘black’) came out in 2012 and has been a best-seller ever since. The fragrance is truly complex. The base notes are amber civet, Indonesian patchouli, vetiver, leather and vanilla. The heart is composed of nutmeg, geranium, clary sage, Bulgarian rose and black pepper. The top is caraway, violet, pink pepper, bergamot and verbena. The opening is exotic and spicy. The dry down: earthy, smoky and sweet. Some call Noir “the masculine version of Guerlain’s women classic, Shalimar“. Like all Tom Ford’s colognes, it is in the higher price range, but the well-crafted fragrance is well worth its price. Wear it in the daytime or at night.
